As in previous year we are supporting the Link to Hope Shoebox appeal with St Johns Church. Each class will aim to collect enough items to complete a family shoebox. For suggestions of items to bring in see below. All items for the school boxes and any home made boxes need to be in school by the 5th November. If you would like to make your own box please see the school office for a leaflet.
What makes Link to Hope Shoebox Appeal 2025 different?
Your shoeboxes will go to the poorest people in Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria and Romania.
Unlike many other shoebox appeals, their boxes are for entire families or the elderly, so nobody's left out.
The charity is small, yet established enough to have personal relationships with the individuals in Eastern Europe who work hard delivering your boxes. For transparency, we also carry out spot-checks to confirm that the right people are receiving your boxes.
The charity believe that sending shoeboxes shows love & indicates to people in war-torn or poverty-stricken circumstances that they have not been forgotten. Boxes are given regardless of their background, colour, creed or religion.
What should I send?
The families who receive your Christmas shoeboxes often have to choose between buying food or fuel. Buying presents is a low priority, as their homes often lack running water, are cold, damp and dark because they have no electricity.
Link to Hope Shoebox Appeal List therefore mixes essential and 'luxury' items:

Well done to Sycamore Class who presented our very first class assembly of the year this week. The children wrote their own lines sharing their favourite piece of learning this term, ranging from football and rugby to using number lines! They were all very brave speaking in front of such a large audience, and the children were so proud to show off their art, English, Spanish and singing! Dolce Catering also gave out samples of our delicious school dinners and the children enjoyed showing their work and sharing some of our new library books with their parents and grandparents.
Don't forget Non-Uniform day tomorrow raising money for the African Children's Trust. School will finish for half term at the normal time of 3.15pm.
What an exciting week for special assemblies! On Monday, Maryam, Mohammad, Hasfa and Yaseen told the school about their life in Afghanistan and how it is different in the UK. Yesterday, representatives from every class told us all about their important Black British historical figure for Black History Month. We learned about Benjamin Zephaniah, Malorie Blackman, Howard Gale, Mary Seacole and many more. Well done to all those children who stood up and spoke so well in front of an audience.
Oak and Rowan classes have been learning about Superheroes and our Real-Life Superheroes who help our community. They were really lucky to have both a Police Officer and the Fire Service come in to meet them. The children asked the Police Officer lots of questions and specifically wanted him to play with them in their police station role play area. We asked what PC Terry thought his super power was and he said he has to have super speed to be a policeman! Oak class had already been detectives that day figuring out who took some biscuits from Mrs Whyte's desk so they were excited to tell PC Terry about that. The Wantage fireservice kindly returned to see us after our initial visit had to be cancelled due to an emergency! They talked the children through their role, what they had to wear and carry then showed us round the fire engine. It was a brilliant morning! The Firefighters thought their super powers were bravery, strength and speed. THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone in our community who help us and particularly to Wantage Fire Station and TVP South Oxon and Vale of White Horse for coming to see us.
Last week, these curious posters appeared around school advertising the unusual situation of Mrs Jenkins' vanished scarf! Year 2 worked quickly to produce these detailed descriptions and, thankfully, the scarf soon was discovered. Well done Maple class for these super posters.
School photos will be taken today so don't forget to smarten up and, most importantly, bring your best smile today! CHEESE!
Oak class recently went for a walk around the school to learn what the rest of the school looked like. They then returned to the classroom and drew maps of the school. We were really impressed with the details they could remember!
